Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which is found in many buildings constructed in Nova Scotia during the 1970′s and earlier. Asbestos was placed in building materials for its positive attributes; it is very durable, an excellent thermal and acoustic insulator, and resistant to fire. These building materials can range anywhere from floor and ceiling tiles to plaster, drywall compounds and many insulations. Exposure to asbestos is linked to potentially fatal diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.
Asbestosis is a medical condition within the lungs linked to the inhalation of asbestos fibres. Asbestos fibres are often retained within the lungs due to their unique size and structure. The body will form a scar-like tissue over the affected areas (imbedded fibres) decreasing the lungs ability to absorb oxygen.
Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer which develops on the protective lining of many of the bodies organs such as the lungs, heart and stomach. Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma.
Our trained environmental technicians are equipped to identify, safely remove and dispose of asbestos containing materials using industry standard techniques. Contaminated areas are isolated, cleaned, and all affected materials removed for disposal at approved sites. We are also capable of handling mercury and PCB’s.
